FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - (Extracted from the WRCFA Website - www.wrcfa.com)
How old do I have to be before I can be a referee?
You may start to referee once you are 14 years of age but if you are under 16 years of age, you can only referee in junior football until your 16th birthday, at which time you may then referee in open age if you choose.
Can women become referees?
Yes, most definitely. Women referees are encouraged to referee both women's and men's football.
How do I go about becoming a referee?
There are a number of ways to make a start.
1. Contact the County FA office on 0113 282 1222 and ask them
2. Check the 'Courses' pages on this site. Click HERE
3. Contact the Referee Association nearest to where you live
What is involved in becoming a referee?
Before you can become a qualified referee, you have to take and pass a Referee Course.
How long does a course take?
The course is in two parts. Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 takes 4 sessions of 2 hours. Tier 2 takes a further 5 sessions of 2 hours. These sessions are spread over a period of weeks. Usually, the course is one session weekly (approx 9 weeks). The course may have 2 sessions per week, depending on the venue's availability.
What is involved on the Course?
Tier 1 is designed to teach the Laws of Association Football. Tier 2 is designed to teach the skills and techniques of being a referee, including 'on the job' supervised training.
Are there any exams?
Yes. At the end of Tier 1 there is a 'tick box' written examination. At the end of Tier 2 there is a further written and oral exam
What is the pass mark?
The pass mark for Tier 1 is 80%. Tier 2 pass mark is 75%
How much does it cost to become a referee?
The actual course is FREE, however all referees have to register each year with the County FA. The current Registration Fee is £10-00. This Registration Fee is payable at the start of the course. Obviously at some stage, you will need to buy a referee kit. Often, other referees will help you with this and Match Fees will also assist in this area.
What equipment will I need for the Course?
Very little. All text books are provided by the Football Association free of charge. A pen and paper is all that is required.
Is there any training after I qualify as a referee?
Yes. There is a continuation training programme for all referees. Help and guidance is readily available from the County FA, the Referee's Association and your Course Instructor
